In October 2018 my family took my Mother to Tasmania for her 70th Birthday. We based ourselves in Hobart and spent each day travelling the surrounding areas visiting restaurants, wineries, little towns and sightseeing. The landscape is breathtaking, and we couldn't look at another piece of food by the time we were done!
Each morning I woke up before dawn (4 AM!) to drive out to a different spot to try and catch the sunrise. On my bucket list was the Tessellated Pavement. It's one of the best known examples of this particular type of natural erosion in the world. The tides, oxidation of the rock, and type of rock form amazingly regular square patterns (Tessellations). The opportunities for different compositions are endless.
I go there about half an hour before the sun rose and over the next couple of hours was in photographers' heaven. Luckily the sun and clouds co-operated somewhat that morning to give me some beautiful colour as the sun broke over the horizon, and then some beautiful long exposures of the rapidly moving early morning cloud.
The next morning I drove up to the top of Mt Wellington to capture an amazing sunrise over the city of Hobart ... only to be met with heavy cloud, freezing temperatures and rain!! As I huddled in a shelter the only solace was a choir rehearsing in the enclosed glass room. Bizarre but beautiful.
I jumped back into the car and drove down under the cloud line, whilst there was still some sunrise magic and caught some beautiful images - silhouettes of trees with the sun lighting up the mist, and an amazing rock field.
Some of the other images are an old asylum called "Willow Court", an abandoned building at Port Arthur, Richmond bridge - the oldest stone span bridge in Australia, and a beautiful Hobart winery.
