The 2020 Mono Awards
B&W is not my usual style, but I entered some images to see how I’d fare. I didn’t make it to the top 30, but was happy to receive ‘Highly Commended’ for three images.
This one was taken at Lake Bellfield at Halls Gap in the Grampians. I had just come down from Mount William for some sunrise photography (it was around 0 degrees!!) and there was the most amazing fog covering the lake, that was quickly evaporating away. I pulled over and ran out to the shore to capture a few shots before the fog was completely gone. At the precisely the right angle, the sunlight lit these spider webs like glistening chains of diamonds. I managed to catch a hint of the fog in the background just before it all burnt away.
This image was taken in China on the Longshen rice terraces. It was shot using an infra-red camera that only sees the top of the visual spectrum. Light reflected from plants is rendered as white due to the chlorophyll in the green leaves. It can give a really interesting effect. The scene was in reality a brilliant green. The day was overcast but there was some beautiful morning light hitting the top of the hills.
This image was also taken in China on the Longshen rice terraces with my infra-red camera. There was a lone tree at the top of the path, and an old man had happened to stop right there to rest and consider the view. Serendipity. I just to shoot this one with a long lens to remove the open space behind the hills, really compress the landscape and play with the layers and patterns of the rice fields. This almost gives a sense that the land could by curving upwards out of the frame.
